Distance matters, but less than people think

It is true that a physically closer server responds faster: every network round trip takes time, and distance adds to it. But on a modern site, distance to the server almost never explains the slowness people feel.

What causes it is oversized images, too many third-party scripts, unnecessary fonts and render-blocking code. A lean site on a distant server beats a heavy site on a nearby one, every time.

What an edge network changes

A global edge network keeps a copy of your site in many locations and serves each visitor from the nearest one. For a static or well-cached site, the question "where is the server" largely stops mattering: a copy is already near the visitor, wherever they are.

It is also what makes a site equally fast for a customer in Casablanca and one in Paris or Montreal — which matters as soon as your market is not purely local.

The criteria that should come before price

The price gap between two hosts is almost always smaller than the cost of a single day offline.

• Automatic, self-renewing HTTPS. An expired certificate shows every visitor a security warning.
• Automatic backups, with a tested restore. A backup nobody has ever restored is not a backup.
• Reachable support, in a language you speak, at hours that suit you.
• The ability to leave. Can you export your site and your data and take them elsewhere?
• An invoice in your company’s name, with credentials you own.

One exception that matters

If your business handles data subject to a residency obligation, the question changes nature: it is no longer a performance decision but a compliance one, settled with your advisers rather than a speed comparison.

Outside that case, choose on reliability and ease of operation, and spend the difference on making the site lighter. That is where the seconds are won.
