AI assistants for customer service: what works, and what to avoid.

An AI assistant can answer common questions at any hour. Done badly, it frustrates customers and invents answers. The difference is in the preparation and the limits you set.
Customers ask the same questions again and again: opening hours, prices, delivery, availability, how to book. An AI assistant on your website or WhatsApp can answer them instantly, day and night. It works well when it is prepared carefully, and badly when it is left to improvise.
Good tasks for an assistant
- Answering frequent questions from your own, verified information.
- Helping visitors find the right product, service or page.
- Collecting the details of a request before passing it to your team.
- Booking or rescheduling appointments through your calendar.
Give it reliable sources
An assistant is only as good as the information behind it. Write clear answers to common questions, keep prices and policies up to date, and limit the assistant to that material. It should say “I don’t know” rather than invent an answer.
Always offer a human
Complaints, complex requests and sensitive situations need a person. Make the handover easy and visible: a button, a phone number, a WhatsApp contact, with the conversation passed along so the customer does not repeat everything.
Be transparent and careful
- Tell customers they are talking to an assistant.
- Do not ask for more personal data than needed, and explain how it is used.
- Review conversations regularly to spot wrong answers and missing information.
The best assistant knows its limits, and hands over before the customer gets frustrated.
