Performance is a design decision.

A beautiful website that loads slowly is a beautiful website few people see. Speed belongs in the art direction.

Cinematic websites have a reputation for being heavy. They don't have to be. Most weight comes from decisions nobody made on purpose: uncompressed video in the hero, five font families, animation libraries loaded for a single fade.

Design with a budget

  • The opening frame renders without waiting for JavaScript.
  • Images are served in modern formats, at the size the screen actually needs.
  • Video loads after its poster — and only when it is about to be seen.
  • Motion respects reduced-motion preferences.
  • Fonts are self-hosted, subset and preloaded.

These are not engineering afterthoughts. They shape what the designer draws. A hero built from typography and one optimised image will beat a background video on almost every device — and often look more confident.

Fast is a feeling. Visitors can't name it, but they notice when it's missing.
